Many real locations in Game of Thrones were transformed into their fictional counterparts using CGI. But the Tower of Joy (where a young Ned Stark fought Targaryens and Jon Snow was born) required The Iron Islands, AKA Ballintoy Harbour and Beach. When Theon finally returns to his home of the Iron Islands, the main arrival scene was filmed at Ballintoy Harbour, right on the tip of Northern Ireland. The nearby Ballintoy Beach was also used for filming those scenes of him being ‘re-baptised’ as a follower of the Drowned God. East to The North, the lands near Winterfell, and the scene in the first episode where Eddard Stark kills a deserter from the Night's Watch.
